Memories shared as building closes
Students walk in and out of Cartwright Center, ca. 1960, just after the building opened in 1959. Since then, UWL students have made many memories inside. A recent university Facebook post asking for favorite Cellar memories brought more than 150 comments ranging from food to friends to first dates.
Freshman year Emily (Ordway) Enstad, ’13, had her first date down in the Cellar on Valentine’s Day with her Korey Enstad — now her husband. “He even used one of his own meals ... classy!,” she writes. Read the full story.
Starting spring semester, students will be making new memories in UWL’s new Student Union: The U. Grand opening week will be celebratedJan.23-29. A community open house is planned from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29.
Short-term plans for Cartwright include renovating Valhalla to become the gymnastics practice facility. It will also house UWL’s ROTC program, Upward Bound and Wrestling, as well as College of Science and Health staff when Cowley Hall is demolished as part of the second phase of the Science Labs Building project in several years. After completion of the Science Labs Building project and the new fieldhouse, Cartwright is scheduled to be demolished.
