Archeology continues to be the perfect family bonding activity for the Gresens.
Three generations of Gresens work together with MVAC this summer
For upwards of 20 years, Bill Gresens has spent time digging and surveying with the Mississippi Valley Archeology Center.
Gresens got his start with MVAC while working at UWL helping faculty, staff and offices like MVAC apply for grants. He’s been a volunteer at public field schools, participated in contract work and helps out in the research lab.
“It’s sort of helped me through my retirement to give me some purpose other than sitting at home in a rocking chair,” says Bill with a laugh.
But the MVAC crew Bill spent time with this summer was extra special: his family. Bill was joined by his son Nick Gresens and his grandsons Connor Gresens and Tommy Teegan.
“I grew up around MVAC,” says Nick. “Now my son comes for the field experience.”
Nick and Connor live in Rochester, New York. This isn’t the first time that an archeological experience has been a nice excuse to spend time with his dad.
“I remember about 15 years ago, after I had moved out of the house, we worked together on a site in Prairie du Chien,” says Nick. “Digging with my dad really is a special time.”
Bill and Nick admit archeology is one of the weirdest ways to bond as a family, but the younger Gresens say it’s fun and they appreciate the quality time.
“It really does make for a good family activity,” says Tommy.
“It’s really special that it’s three generations of Gresens out here this summer,” says Bill. “Who knows, maybe it will continue for generations after this.”
