UW-L faculty and instructional staff came together for two, intensive days of writing during the first ever Faculty Writing Hunker, May 21-22.
The event was an opportunity for those with writing projects on the horizon to start working and find technical support at the Institute for Campus Excellence, rooms 152 and 153 Murphy Library.
“Even though we are not locked in — it kind of feels that way — in a good way,” says David Mindel, of Murphy Library, who was co-authoring a paper on the library’s digital collections.
Organizers have received positive feedback from participants and more writing hunkers are likely to be planned in the future, says Virginia Crank, a professor of English who was one of the organizers.
The event was catered to faculty and instructional staff working on any writing project whether a paper, grant proposal, analysis of data, development of new course materials, or polishing off other projects.
Besides space and time, the ICE also provided support with experts in writing, research and relaxation on hand. Participants even took time to stretch with a yoga instructor.
“With heavy teaching loads, finding the time to write is a challenge, and sometimes faculty and staff need technical assistance to finish the project — or even to get it started,” says Bob Hoar, associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.
UW-L faculty and staff coming up with the idea for the event included: Virginia Crank, Heidi Jones and Bryan Kopp.
