Sokha is one of nine girls in unforgiving circumstances featured in the film "Girl Rising." The film, which captures their dreams, their voices and their lives, will be shown on campus on Friday, Oct. 11 — the International Day of the Girl. The film will be shown from 1:30-3:30 p.m. and again from 4-6 p.m. in 1309 Centennial Hall. "Girl Rising" is being shown worldwide as part of a movement dedicated to empowering and achieving educational equality for girls around the world. Girl Rising is a global action campaign for girls' education with the message that educating girls changes the world. A girl with an extra year of education can earn up to more than 20 percent as an adult, according to the World Bank. The film, directed by Academy Award nominee Richard Robbins, is written by nine celebrated writers and narrated by nine renowned actresses. "Girl Rising" showcases the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world. The event is sponsored by UW-L's Organization for Campus Women; the Campus Climate & Diversity and Multicultural Student Services offices; and the Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies department. For more information, contact Karmin Van Domlen.
