Students spend Saturday at the Kane St. Community Garden
When UWL senior Carly Juzwick came to UWL, she wanted to make sure she continued an activity she often did with her family — volunteering. “My family was always into it,” she says. “They’ve really instilled in me a need to give back and be a part of a community.”
Juzwick along with about 15 other UWL students spent time planting vegetables at the Kane Street Community Garden in La Crosse recently. The garden, which is part of the Hunger Task Force, helps provide nutritious items to the hungry in the area. The Hunger Task Force also supports UWL’s on-campus food pantry.
“It’s so vital and important to volunteer in the community,” says Juzwick. “We take advantage of the resources, so it’s important to give back.”

Ugetconnected
A number of the students volunteering found the opportunity through Ugetconnected, an online portal where community organizations can post volunteer needs and students can find causes they want to support. It’s a collaborative effort with the United Way, UWL, Viterbo and Western Technical College.
“It’s super awesome,” says Juzwick. “When I first came here, volunteer opportunities could be kind of hard to find. Now it’s all in one place and everyone should take advantage of it.”
