Starting Sunday, Oct. 9, participants will work through a series of daily challenges from decreasing trash to eating locally and sustainably.
UW-L’s week-long “carbon cleanse” is inspired by the book “No Impact Man” by author Colin Beavan. Starting Sunday, Oct. 9, participants will work through a series of daily challenges from decreasing trash to eating locally and sustainably. UW-L will have themes each day from promoting sustainable transportation to using renewable resources.
“Ease and convenience has really taken over our society,” notes UW-L senior Rachel Lee who will be participating in No Impact Week. “I’m doing it to be involved and to inform people about their lifestyle choices and how that affects the environment and their body.”
No Impact Week is part of UW-L’s sustainability-themed year, which includes a variety of presentations and programs related to sustainability, as well as reading Beavan’s book as part of a campus common reading program.
“The point is to get people aware of what they are consuming on a daily basis,” explains Heather Hulett, chair of UW-L’s sustainability committee. “We hope that some of the ideas from the week will cause a permanent change in participants' consumption of resources.”
