UW-L's College of Science and Health and the Office of Continuing Education and Extension teamed up again this year to help middle school students experience science.

UW-L's College of Science and Health and the Office of Continuing Education and Extension teamed up again this year to help middle school students experience science. The duo added to the long-time popular Girls in Science Program on campus. New this year was a similar program for boys, Boys Science Exploration Camp.
The program for middle school girls addresses the need to attract more girls to the sciences. The program for boys was created when organizers noticed fewer programs offered in Wisconsin for boys.
To fuel a passion in the math and sciences, and, ultimately, increase the number of scientists in the U.S., both programs will be annual events.
This year programs were held June 25-26 and included three hands-on science workshops and a chemistry show. Participants stayed overnight in residence halls where UW-L students and alumni served as resident assistants.
This year's camps drew 44 girls and 33 boys.
Teachers for the two programs were Connie Arzigian, Archaeology; Faye Ellis, Biology; Robert Allen and Jenni McCool, both Mathematics; Jeff Bryan, Sandra Grunwald, Sandra Koster and Laura Roessler, all Chemistry; Kenny Hunt, Computer Science; and Seth King, Physics. UW-L science majors served as teaching assistants in the workshops.
Organizers of the yearly event are Karen DeSchepper, Continuing Education; and Grunwald and Susan Kelly, both Mathematics.
