A UWL alumnus will be honored at the 2016 Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at Viterbo University Fine Arts Center, 929 Jackson St., La Crosse.
The 2016 MLK, Jr. Leadership Award will be presented that evening to Naohoua (Tony) Yang. Yang has served as Cultural Liaison for the School District of La Crosse since 1996. “He deeply exemplifies the legacy of King as a role model for many as well as in his work for social justice and opportunity,” say celebration organizers.
The featured speaker at the event is Sheyann Webb. Webb was named the “Smallest Freedom Fighter” by King as the youngest participant to take part in the historically first attempted Selma to Montgomery march known as “Bloody Sunday” in 1965. She is the nationally known co-author of “Selma, Lord, Selma: Girlhood Memories of the Civil Rights Days.”
A new addition to the celebration this year is a concert and film series. The concert is 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17 at English Lutheran Church, 1509 King St., La Crosse. It is co-sponsored by Congregation Sons of Abraham, English Lutheran Church, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of La Crosse, Roncalli Newman Center and the La Crosse Public Library. The Film Festival continues at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of La Crosse with the documentary “Home of the Brave.” The two other films, “Joachim Prinz: I Shall Not Be Silent” and “Sister of Selma” will be shown in February.
