The UW System Board of Regents approved a new, 7,000-square-foot water chilling plant to be built on the west side of the UW-L campus.
A Regent committee first approved the measure during the Board of Regents meeting Thursday, June 5. The full board gave it a green light Friday, June 6.
The new chilled water plant will increase the capacity to cool a growing UW-L campus. With a new student center, new science building and other projects on the horizon, UW-L will need the chilled water plant to supplement cooling at the current chilled water system, located in the campus heating and cooling plant, at the corner of Pine St. and East Ave.

The new plant will be located on the parking lot between the Health Sciences Center and Angell Hall. It will take up about 60 parking spaces, which will be made up through an addition to the new Parking Ramp to be complete in September 2015.
The approximately $ 8.4 million plant will be funded half by state tax dollars and half by program revenue.
The plant will also need to be approved by the State Building Commission in June. If approved, construction is anticipated to start in April 2015 with completion in fall 2016.
The plant will house two, 1,200-ton electrically powered centrifugal chillers and related equipment. The facility will be built to accommodate another chiller to meet future needs. Underground piping will connect the plant to the existing chilled water distribution system, which will provide air conditioning for the new student center, new Cowley Science Labs Building, a Recreational Eagle Center addition, and new residence hall. The student center is anticipated to be complete in early 2017. The science building is anticipated to be complete in August 2018.
