[caption id="attachment_690" align="alignleft" width="206" caption="Over the 10-week period Jan. 17 to March 27 UW-L is competing with around 600 schools measuring the success of their recycling and waste prevention efforts."]Recyclemania logo[/caption] RecycleMania is a nationwide friendly competition between colleges and universities to see who can reduce, reuse and recycle the most campus waste. Recycling is one component of increasing UW-L’s commitment to environmental and social sustainability. All on campus are encouraged to continue and improve their recycling habits. Place on-campus generated recyclable materials into labeled recycling containers in buildings or in the labeled containers adjacent to residence halls. In addition to recycling, the competition measures the amount of waste generated per person. This performance measure is actually more important than recycling rates. The environmental benefits of reducing consumption and reusing what is consumed for other beneficial purposes far outweigh recycling. Common materials recycled at UW-L include paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, aluminum and tin cans. For information related to the national recycling competition, visit http://www.recyclemania.org/.
