Bowling event works to strikeout tobacco.
Cheers were be heard coming from near Hoeschler Tower Nov. 19, as students rolled a frozen turkey down an oiled tarp. The Frozen Turkey Bowling event was organized to educate the community about tobacco products.
“Anyone who’s ready to quit, we have the resources available,” says Morgan Drexler, UWL’s SPARK Intern. SPARK is a Wisconsin-wide program with the American Lung Association that educates about tobacco and pushes for tobacco-free policies on campus.
The morning event coincided with the Great American Smokeout, an annual event from the American Cancer Society encouraging people to quit smoking.
“College is a time when young people are at a higher risk for starting smoking and transitioning from experimental to regular tobacco use,” says Drexler. “We want to encourage life-long healthy habits and ensure a safe and healthy environment for everyone on campus. That’s why we are taking this stand and supporting those looking to quit.”
As for the frozen bird, the County Health Department will see if the turkey remained frozen and is suitable to eat. If it passes, Drexler says it will be donated to the Salvation Army.
Frozen Turkey Bowling was put on thanks to efforts from UWL’s Wellness Resource Center and the La Crosse County Health Department.
