UWL printmakers join Pump House for Mississippi Steamroll event April 29-30
UWL printmakers join Pump House for Mississippi Steamroll
Area artists will drive an industrial-scale asphalt roller to create large-scale works of art Friday and Saturday, April 29-30 at the Pump House Regional Art Center.
All are welcome to witness the process of printmaking during the second annual Mississippi Steamroll event in the center’s parking lot. Anyone looking to make a print is asked to register ahead of time online.
On Friday, April 29, UWL printmaking students will create prints alongside about 500 elementary, middle and high school students from 15 area schools.
On Saturday, April 30, students from Winona State and Luther College will create prints along with UWL alumni and artists from the community.
Artists will use woodcuts — blocks of wood engraved with designs — to create the prints. Blocks are covered in ink and then pressed to fabric or paper using the steamroller. Organizers anticipate creating more than 100 prints this year.
The first Mississippi Steamroll event was dreamed up by two UWL printmaking alums who were working at the Pump House in 2015. They approached Joel Elgin, UWL professor of art, and together organized the first event where they printed more than 75 images using a steamroller.
