Jacob Gloe, the UW-L Alumni Association Rochester Network Scholarship recipient, is a double major in applied mathematics and computational physics with a minor in computer science. One of Gloe’s many hobbies is rock climbing — an activity he’s done since he was 10 years old. In college he continues to compete. He received first place in 2013 and second place in 2014 for the Wisconsin Indoor Climbing Series.[/caption]

When asked what he enjoys more — academics or extra curricular activities at UW-L — Gloe says the “nerd” in him would have to say academics.
Gloe says his passion for math, physics and computer science grew while attending classes, doing undergraduate research and tutoring at UW-L. He had originally wanted to be a math education major, but learned his love of research doing computational astrophysics with Associate Professor of Physics Eric Barnes.
“There is so much more to be learned in these fields (math and physics),” says Gloe.
He says it has helped to have support on his educational journey from the UW-L Alumni Association through the Rochester Network Scholarship. He has applied the $500 award toward his tuition this year. The UW-L Alumni Association awards several network scholarships each year in addition to three legacy scholarships.
Gloe will earn his bachelor’s degree in May and plans to earn a doctorate degree in applied mathematics and one day teach and conduct research at a university.
“It’s nice to be rewarded for my accomplishments and hard work,” says Gloe. “It’s stressful being a double major and minor so it takes some of that stress away.”
