Local educators converge for 10th Annual STEM Resource Day
Local K-12 educators will have an opportunity to discover award-winning resources to help teach science, technology, engineering and math during a free, two-day event at UWL.
The 10th Annual K-12 STEM Teacher Resource Day will run from 8 a.m.–6 p.m., Monday, April 18 and from 8-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 19, in the Institute for Campus Excellence, 150 Murphy Library. Participants may drop in at any time during the two sessions.
Attendees will be able to browse, read and review the latest award-winning non-fiction books and similar resources relevant to K-12 teachers, librarians, school media center administrators and other educators.

“Teachers who have attended often say that they feel so much more prepared to select specific materials that will benefit their classes and their curricula without having to guess,” says Tim Gerber, program organizer and UWL biology professor. “It saves them time and money in the long run.”
The selection will include trade books, books published commercially and intended for a general audience, which are often used to supplement or replace textbooks. Teachers will find engaging stories and descriptions of hands-on activities such as experiments to try in the classroom.
Murphy Library purchases the books and other materials annually from Science Books & Films’ “Best Lists,” the National Science Teachers Association’s “Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children” and other lists. This year author Sy Montgomery’s books and those included in the ‘Scientists in the Field’ series, and the 2016 AAAS/Subaru SB&F for Excellence in Science finalists and winners will be featured. Following the event, the books will be available year-round in the Alice Haggar Curriculum Resource Center’s curriculum collection in Murphy Library.
