The director of the Institute of Reconciliation and Social Justice at the University of the Free State, South Africa, will speak at UW-La Crosse.
JC van der Merwe will discuss his co-authored book, Transformation and Legitimation in Post-Apartheid Universities, from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, in 3314 Student Union. The presentation is free and open to all.

The talk will focus on the "Reitz" incident in one of the residence halls at the University of the Free State, which led to the creation of the Institute for Reconciliation and Social Justice. The author will discuss issues of social justice, institutional culture, and university administration, faculty, staff and student resistance to transformation, despite official policies and programs that promise diversity and inclusion.
