UW-L celebrates 10 major accolades in 2013

Read about 10 major accomplishments the university made over the last year. From high rankings to national awards, UW-L turned a lot of heads in 2013.

UW-L has received “best value” recognition from the leading financial magazine for more than a decade. UW-L is the No. 3 best public regional university in the Midwest, according to U.S.News & World Report’s 2014 America’s Best Colleges list. And, UW-L was one of only 39 institutions nationally in the magazine’s “A Focus on Student Success” for undergraduate research and creative projects. UW-L History Professor Victor Macías-González received the Wisconsin Professor of the Year Award Nov. 14 in Washington, D.C. The award, sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, is part of the U.S. Professor of the Year Program, which salutes the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country. Macías-González is the second UW-L professor to receive the honor. History Professor Greg Wegner earned the recognition in 2011. UW-L’s Biology Department received the 2013 UW System Regents Teaching Excellence Award for academic departments and programs. The prestigious award goes to one program in the UW-System each year. Recipients are selected for their strong commitment to teaching and learning, use of effective teaching strategies to enhance student learning and significant impact on students’ intellectual development. The committee was also impressed with the UW-L Biology Department’s success with underrepresented students. The UW-L College of Business Administration was listed among 12 of the top colleges in the nation for innovative assessment practices. The recognition came in a report on Best and Innovative Practices in Higher Education Assessment from Hanover Research, a global research firm. The UW System College Readiness Math MOOC — a Massive Open Online Course developed by UW-L faculty and staff — won a national award for collaboration. The 2013 Desire2Excel award is given to individuals, groups or organizations that display exemplary ingenuity, creativity and collaboration in empowering students to achieve their academic goals. UW-L men's track & field team takes indoor, outdoor championship. UW-L men's track & field team captured its 12th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Outdoor Championship at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. UW-L also won the national title at the NCAA Division III Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship. UW-L is a national leader in producing scholars in the Fulbright program. The university was listed among the 80 “top producing” institutions that had the highest number of Fulbright grants this year for faculty, administrators and other professionals. The list was highlighted in the Oct. 28 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education. UW-L has received the 2013 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. As a recipient of the annual HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — UW-L was featured along with 55 other recipients in INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine’s November 2013 issue. UW- ranks high for students studying abroad and international efforts. The university ranks No. 30 nationally for students studying abroad. And UW-L has the fourth largest international student population of all colleges and universities in Wisconsin.   * UW-L departments, programs, faculty, staff and students receive numerous awards throughout the year.
