Last month UW-L student Anicka Purath was appointed as the new traditional student representative on the UW System Board of Regents, an 18-member board that sets admission standards, reviews and approves university budgets and establishes the regulatory framework within each UW System school. As the traditional student representative, Purath will bring a student’s perspective to the discussions and decisions of the board. Purath says the biggest issue facing students in higher education today is tuition. “I am very thankful for Gov. Scott Walker’s tuition freeze,” she says. “Tuition should not be increased when there is a surplus of funds [in UW System reserves.]Keeping tuition as low as possible is key to the retention of current students, as well as the encouragement of prospective students.” Purath also says she wants to see the board better communicate to the state about the UW System’s financial situation. In addition to tuition, Purath wants to see the UW Flexible Option expanded. The UW Flex Option would allow students to earn credit in other ways besides learning in a traditional classroom, such as real world experience. “I believe the UW Flex Option would allow more state residents to earn college degrees,” Purath says. Purath says she is ready to take on her new position. “It is truly an honor to represent all students of the UW System,” she says. “I hope to promote the System. Our colleges, universities and extension programs are the pride of Wisconsin, and rightfully so.” Walker appointed Purath to the UW Board of Regents in March. The state senate confirmed her appointment April 1.
