Four nationally renowned jazz artists and educators will perform concerts and hold workshops at UWL's inaugural Jazz Residency Program.

Dan Gailey … saxophonist/composer/arranger is the director of jazz studies and professor of music at the University of Kansas. Gailey is the recipient of the 1996 IAJE Gil Evans Fellowship, an annual award that identifies an emerging jazz composer from an international field. Under his direction, the KU Jazz Studies Program has received 19 DownBeat Student Music Awards.
His compositions can be heard on numerous professional and college big band albums and are published exclusively through UNC Jazz Press. “What Did You Dream?,” his debut CD with the Dan Gailey Jazz Orchestra, was released in July 2010 on Origin/OA2 Records and features all original compositions.
Gailey has been a freelance saxophonist in Seattle, Denver and Kansas City, performing with Kevin Mahogany, Eric Marienthal, Red Richards, Claude "Fiddler" Williams, and others. He has appeared as a guest artist/clinician throughout the U.S., Canada, Sweden and China.

Dave Glenn[/caption]
Dave Glenn … director of jazz studies and professor of low brass at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, received a bachelor of music in trombone performance from North Texas State University and a master of music in composition from the University of Northern Colorado.
Glenn spent 11 years as a professional trombonist in New York City. There, he played for 10 years with the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band and toured extensively with Bill Watrous’ Manhattan Wildlife Refuge, Diana Ross and Lou Rawls. He also subbed on tours with Chuck Mangione; Blood, Sweat and Tears; and the Mel Lewis Orchestra.
Glenn has recorded two jazz CDs of original compositions and arrangements, “Journeys” and “National Pastime.” He has composed four commissioned works for orchestra, the latest being “A Valley of Streams” by the Walla Walla Symphony in 2007, and numerous chamber works. Glenn is an endorsing artist for Conn/Selmer, a member of American Composers Forum and an Origin Records recording artist.

Todd Strait[/caption]
Todd Strait … drummer who has performed in festivals and clubs in the U.S., Malaysia, Japan, Europe, South America, Canada, Turkey and Israel. He has recorded more than 100 CDs, many Grammy nominated, and is a regular on radio and TV appearances.
Strait joined Marian McPartland's trio in 1982 and played in New York City clubs and traveled occasionally with her across the country. In 1984, he began playing with guitarists Tal Farlow and Barney Kessel. In 1986, he joined Woody Herman's Thundering Herd for a three-month, cross-country stint before returning to his home base in Kansas City.
Along with living and performing in Kansas City and Portland, Strait has toured nationally and internationally with Kansas City natives Kevin Mahogany, Karrin Allyson and Eldar.

Dave Marck … pianist who has resided and performed in New York City for 34 years. In addition to his jazz piano performances, Marck is associate music director for Jacque D’amboises National Dance Institute, as well as accompanist for the New School jazz and contemporary music program. He has performed with many noted artists including Junior Cook, Ralph Lalama, Jimmy Owens, Jed Levy, Ron Horton, Charles McPherson, Roy Hargrove and Charles Tolliver. He has also accompanied entertainers including Joan Rivers, Cloris Leachman and current Broadway star, Tony Yazbeck. Many NYC veteran jazz artists have participated in Marck’s twice weekly quartet sessions.
Never forgetting his La Crosse roots, Marck makes annual appearances in the Coulee Region. During his visits, he often conducts workshop for young musicians in local schools and universities. His performance with La Crosse Jazz Quartet members on the Viterbo Fine Arts Main Stage has become a much-anticipated annual event.
