Coate Hall will host its annual St. Baldrick’s event from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Recreational Eagle Center.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to funding childhood cancer research. While most donations are monetary, some participants cut their hair, or shave it off entirely, at St. Baldrick’s events around the country in solidarity with those suffering from childhood cancers. By shaving their heads, participants inspire others to donate money to support childhood cancer research.
This is the seventh year for the event at UW-L. Coate Hall Director Lisa Jicinsky expects 100-150 people will have their hair cut or shaved, while 30 others work to raise money without shaving or cutting.
Student Chair Jeff Benike says 30 student volunteers are putting together the event and asking local businesses for support.
“We are also putting on fundraisers around campus, such as Miracle Minutes, where residents go around their residence hall for one minute and collect as much money as possible,” says Benike.
Students, faculty and staff aren’t the only ones donating time, money and hair; the La Crossecommunity has become involved as well.
“In addition to the campus community, about five beauticians donate their time,” says Jicinsky. “A few from Tease will be there to assist in the hair cutting and shaving.”
