University set for new student orientation, welcome week
In less than a week, boxes of clothes, microwaves and notebooks will be flooding into the UWL residence halls. Students will be moving in ahead of the start of a new fall semester.
As they get settled, they’re invited to dozens of events ranging from a movie at the stadium, to ice cream socials and to an annual concert featuring Chancellor Joe Gow.
“We want the students to get engaged and try things,” says Jennie Hartzheim, UWL’s first-year experience coordinator. “We have a variety of activities to help the students build connections.
Continuing this year is a program led by UWL student leaders, called Eagle Guides. The Eagle Guides lead small groups through the orientation process and help the freshmen make connections, meet new friends and learn about life on campus.
“We know that students need to have all of their basic needs met before they can really start learning and excelling,” says Hartzheim.
