“Wheels for All” will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 8, in the Mitchell Hall gymnasium.
By UW-L Student Breanna LevineThe UW-La Crosse Sports Management Association works hard to raise awareness for those with disabilities.
For six years, it has hosted “Wheels for All,” a fundraiser for disability charities.
The 4-on-4 wheelchair basketball tournament will bring students, faculty and staff — with and without disabilities — to the court to raise money for the Center on Disability Health and Adapted Physical Activity.
“Wheels for All” will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 8, in the Mitchell Hall Gymnasium.
“Wheelchair basketball isn’t any different than regular basketball, except that there are four people on the court per team instead of five,” says “Wheels for All” organizer Marcus Toppen. “Players use the same hoops and basketballs as normal basketball.”
This year, the tournament is adding an additional sport to the roster: wheelchair handball.
“Handball is a game very similar to soccer, but the ball is passed by throwing instead of kicking,” explains Toppen.
Toppen says the tournament is a unique experience that isn’t held in many places.
“The event is a great way to learn about those who play sports with disabilities,” he says.
Registration forms to sign up for either tournament are in Mitchell Hall and the Recreational Eagle Center. Wheelchair basketball requires a team of five or more players in the men’s, women’s and co-ed divisions. Wheelchair handball requires a team of seven or more players. Registration is $5 per participant. Participants receive a free event T-shirt. Winning teams in each division will be awarded prizes.
