One of the world’s leading Marxist economists will speak about the world’s current economic crisis during a UW-La Crosse presentation.
Prabhat Patnaik speaks on “Alternative Perspectives on the Global Economic Crisis” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in the Hall of Nations in Centennial Hall. A reception will follow. The presentation is free, but donations will be accepted to fund future international scholar speakers through the UW-L Foundation’s Ambassador's Roundtable Account.
Patnaik, born in Jatni, Orissa, India, in 1945, is an Indian Marxist economist and political commentator who has achieved international acclaim for his analysis of economics and politics. He is in the Biographical Dictionary of 100 Dissenting Economists Past and Present.
Patnaik began his education at Daly College, Indore. He earned a bachelor’s in economics with honors from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and then went on to study at Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship. He obtained a bachelor’s and doctorate in philosophy at Balliol College and Nuffield College, respectively, following which he received a faculty position at the University of Cambridge. He returned to India in 1974 and has been teaching at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. He retired in 2010, but continues to teach as adjunct faculty.
His specialization is macroeconomics and political economy, areas in which he has written a number of books and articles. Patnaik was part of a four-member task force to the United Nations to recommend reform measures for the global financial system after its collapse in 2008-09. Prior to that, Patnaik received the prestigious V.K.R.V. Rao award as the leading economist of India. More recently, he was the head of the Planning Board in the Indian state of Kerala between 2006 and 2011. He is currently on his annual visit to Columbia University (New York) for a lecture series.
