Words of wisdom from the Peer Health Advocates

Wellness & Health Advocacy encourages students to particpate in Oktoberfest festivities safely and to understand campus policy related to alcohol and/or drug use. Keep reading for helpful advice from the Peer Health Advocates.

The 3 Ds (Springfield College)

"Never let your friends wander off alone and always make sure the people you went into a place with are the people you leave with. And speak up if you see something off!" This means being an active bystander. Use one of the 3 Ds (direct, distract, or delegate) to de-escalate a risky situation. Remember to delegate in case of a medical emergency! If someone is injured or is experiencing an alcohol overdose, call 911 immediately.

"Surround yourself with people you trust to have your back through the festivities! Oktoberfest is meant to be fun, so create a group where everyone can be safe and stick together in the chaos!" Good friends help eachother make good decisions. For some, being safe might mean abstaining from alcohol consumption. For others, it might mean drinking in moderation and monitoring their BAC. Surround yourself with friends who support your choices and encourage you to make the safest decision!

"Don't drive and drive! There are so many options out there to ensure you get home safe this Oktoberfest. Utilize the Safe Ride, call an Uber, or walk home with a trusted group of friends. There are always alternatives to driving under the influence. Protect yourself and those around you!" Want to know more about the Safe Ride bus? Check out this page. You do not need to show your student ID when riding the Safe Ride.

BAC Information

"Never walk anywhere alone, even if it is nearby. It is always better to walk with at least one other person so if something happens, there is someone with you. Especially if you are under the influence or around others who are - they may not be thinking straight!" The buddy system works for more than safe traveling! Talk with your buddy about how you can hold eachother accountable. Work together to track your drinks and stay hydrated (alternate between alcoholic drinks and water).

"Take care of yourself if you're drinking! Know your limits before you begin and remember to keep in mind that time in the only thing that will sober you up. Staying safe in the best way to have fun during Oktoberfest!" Review our alcohol prevention and education page for safer drinking strategies and other important information.
