Building immunity to HPV

When "enough people in a group or area have achieved immunity (protection) against a virus or other infectious agent" we can witness the power of herd immunity (Cleveland Clinic). According to the Cleveland Clinic, through active immunity, our bodies use "memory" to produce antibodies that fight disease and that memory can be aquired through vaccination.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus and the most common viral STI in the United States. High-risk strains can cause genital warts and cancer (Cleveland Clinic). To prevent genital warts and long-term cancer risk, UWL Wellness & Health Advocacy is partnering with Scenic Bluffs Community Health Centers, Mayo Clinic, and the Wisconsin Cancer Collaborative to bring education and free immunization to UWL students.

Here's what you need to know!

HPV Vaccination (Wisconsin Cancer Collaborative)

On the following dates, UWL students can attend the HPV Immunization Clinic from 10:30am - 3:00pm in Miller Bluff (2110 Student Union). No appointment necessary!

  • October 20, 2025
  • December 8, 2025
  • April 27, 2026

The HPV vaccine is provided at no cost. Scenic Bluffs will either bill insurance for the vaccine cost or cover it through the Vaccines for Adults program. Students are encouraged to check their immunization records (Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois). Other vaccines, including flu and COVID, will be available.

The HPV vaccine is administered through a series of three shots. If you've never received the HPV vaccine, our clinics are timed to align with the recommended dosing schedule. If you've started the series, feel free to stop by the clinics and chat with staff from Scenic Bluffs about when you should get your next dose! Feeling unsure? Email wellness@uwlax.edu or schedule an appointment at the Student Health Center to discuss vaccination.

The 2024 American College Health Assessment at UWL found that only 59% of survey respondents had completed the HPV vaccination series and 24% didn't know their status. Join the herd and help us bring that 59% closer to 100%.
