Moving (Straight Ahead) Gayly Forward: A Look Back

Dancer, performance artist, and long time gay activist Patrick Scully is presenting his perspectives on the intersection of performance and queer activism. Mr. Scully has developed a career that combines performance with political activism. He was, for example, the first artist with openly gay content in his work to receive a Bush Foundation Grant.  The public is invited to this free event hosted by the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

During the conversation, “Moving Straight Ahead Gayly Forward: A Look Back,” Scully will speak to how performance intersects with LGBT activism, how a dancer – using just the body and sound – can articulate political issues, and why an artist such as himself choose to include social issues in his artistic work.

Scully will also be performing his acclaimed performance piece about poet Walt Whitman, Leaves of Grass Illuminated, in two performances in Winona Tuesday, Oct. 10, and Wednesday, Oct. 11. Tuesday’s performance is at Paperbacks and Pieces, 429 Mankato Avenue; Wednesday’s performance is in the WSU Dance Studio, Memorial 300. Memorial can be entered from 8th and Main streets, and the elevator to the left of the entrance can be taken to the third floor. Both performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

Scully’s work has earned him numerous awards, including a Sage Award Special Citation for Lifetime Contribution in Dance in 2010; McKnight Foundation awards in 2015, 1996, 1994, 1990, 1983, and 1982; and a Sally Award for Vision for the Arts in the Twin Cities, 1995. In 1986, he founded and ran Patrick’s Cabaret for numerous years. He has performed all over the world, including Berlin, Cologne, and Potsdam, Germany; Torino, Italy; Belfast, Northern Ireland; Dublin, Ireland; Winnipeg, Canada; Brussels, Belgium; Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
