International Youth Media Summit

UWL will be the site of the 18th International Youth Media Summit (IYMS) from July 24 – August 6, 2023.  Seven UWL students will be awarded scholarships to attend the Summit, through funding provided by the La Crosse Community Foundation. The scholarships will cover all costs for the two-week event (room, meals, daily activities, and excursions).

IYMS is expecting up to 100 people from more than 25 countries this summer.  Filmmakers, aspiring diplomats, journalists and social activists from around the world will be coming to UWL, where together they will produce short films that motivate others to take action in seven issue areas: discrimination, environment, health, poverty, violence, women’s rights, and youth empowerment.  Although everyone in each of the issue groups helps produce the film, prior filmmaking experience is not required.

This year, each issue group will have a UWL scholarship student serving as their La Crosse Community Connection, helping their film crews find locations and resources. They will have other responsibilities and work very hard on their film crews, but they will also enjoy many activities with their new global friends: a cruise on the La Crosse Queen, a delegate talent show at the Pump House, a Closing Night Ceremony and dance party at the Rivoli Theatre.

How to Apply to be a UWL Scholarship Delegate at IYMS 2023:

Apply as either:  

  • A Filmmaker (16-26 years):  have experience creating videos, animations or films and are eager to work with others who share the same passion. 

OR

  • A Diplomat (16-26 years): are a journalist, activist, writer or diplomat-in-training.  Love researching the issues and articulating positions for positive action.  

Go to  https://iyms.org/18th-iyms/ and read all the instructions. Be prepared to fill out the application in one sitting (it will not save).

Mention that you are applying for the UWL Scholarship in the “How Do You Plan To Cover the Costs of Attending” section. To strengthen your application, in the section asking about what you would do after the Summit, think of ways you can share both the film and resources you will create (workshop guides, etc.) in the La Crosse community.
