Research Presentation

Finalist Candidate for faculty in Computer Science & Computer Engineering Department

Dr. Pedro Moreira is a Research Fellow and Instructor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School.  He has strong expertise in robotics, control algorithms, robot-assisted medical procedures, and MR and image-guided robotics.  His research centers on the development of robotic systems aimed at enhancing clinical outcomes in robot-assisted and image-guided medical procedures. His work encompasses various facets of image-guided percutaneous procedures, spanning preoperative planning, the mechanical design and control of robotic devices, and the integration of novel technologies into the operating room.

Abstract for research presentation:

Title: Smart Image-guided and robotic medical procedures

Abstract:

Cancer diagnosis and treatment often rely on advanced imaging technologies, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) plays a crucial role in the localization and staging of tumors. This extends beyond specific cancer types, with applications in various medical interventions. Challenges arise in ensuring accurate instrument placement during procedures due to tool-tissue interaction. In this presentation, we explore efforts to enhance the precision of MRI-guided interventions using computational and robotics technologies. By leveraging a data-driven approach, I aim to customize needle placement plans for individuals, minimizing deviations and optimizing targeting in a personalized manner. This presentation will provide an overview of my recent efforts in developing new technologies and their translation into clinical practice.
