ArtsFest Jazz Concert

ArtsFest 2025 Signature Event

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Department of Music invites the public to an unforgettable evening of jazz, celebration, and reflection as Dr. Jeff Erickson takes the stage one last time as Director of Jazz Studies. The concert, featuring both the UW-La Crosse Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra, will be held on Saturday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bluffs Ballroom of the UW-La Crosse Student Union. Admission is free and open to the public. 

A Signature Event of ArtsFest 2025, this performance highlights not only the exceptional talent of UW-La Crosse’s student musicians but also marks the close of an era for the university’s jazz program. 

“As I reflect on my time here at UWL,” says Dr. Erickson, “I can easily say it is the most rewarding experience in my teaching career. Directing the jazz program here at UWL and working with our talented jazz and saxophone students is a career highlight for me. In turbulent times it can be helpful to look to the future; the potential and promise of our students gives me comfort and hope that we will find our way to a brighter tomorrow.” 

The concert program showcases a wide range of jazz styles—from the cool sophistication of Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments” to the Latin-influenced “Sea Spray” by Fred Stride, and the smooth funk groove in Bob Mintzer’s “Bright Lights.” Featured soloists from across both ensembles include standout performers from Wisconsin, Minnesota, and beyond. 

Also on the program are jazz classics like: “That Warm Feeling” by Sammy Nestico, “Embraceable You” by George Gershwin, “Caravan” by Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol, and the emotionally stirring “Lament” by J.J. Johnson 

Dr. Erickson adds, “I also want to thank my colleagues and the staff in the music department and the School of Visual and Performing Arts for the great work they all do in service to our students. I have benefitted greatly from their support and the opportunity to work collaboratively with them. And finally, thank you, the audience, for supporting the jazz program at UWL and our students.” 

This concert is a chance to honor Dr. Erickson’s decades of dedication and leadership, while looking forward with the vibrant, forward-thinking voices of a new generation of jazz artists. 

This concert is presented as part of ArtsFest 2025, UW-La Crosse’s annual celebration of creativity across the visual and performing arts.
