Online Teaching Summit

Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI)

The US Department of Education and Higher Learning Commission (HLC), UWL's accrediting body, require all online courses to adhere to certain standards for regular and substantive interaction. UWL's Faculty Senate recently passed a policy about expectations for regular and substantive interaction (RSI) to extend to all UWL courses regardless of modality. This event will focus on defining RSI, explain the importance of adhering to RSI standards, share resources to support RSI integration, as well as provide time fro you to reflect on your current and planned RSI integration including drafting a required syllabus statement.

Attend in-person OR via Zoom.
Attend the morning OR the afternoon option.
Attend one or all of the sessions.

Schedule 1: Morning Option

Session A - 8:50am-9:45am – 102 Wing or via Zoom

  • What is RSI and Why Does It Matter? Sandy Grunwald, Associate Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs
  • Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) at UWL: The Current State
  • How UWL has, will, and continues to support instructors with RSI? 

Session B - 9:55am-10:50am – 102 Wing or via Zoom 

  • Definition deep-dive – How do you define RSI?  
  • Reflection - What are you currently doing to meet RSI standards?  
  • Goal setting - What are your course revision goals to align your course with RSI standards? What resources and support will you use to accomplish these revisions? 

Session C - 11:00am-11:55am – 161 Wing or via Zoom

  • Write your syllabus policy – How do you share and explain your approach to RSI with your students?  
  • Action Plan – Put your revision goals into action. Plan to put your revisions goals into action with enough time before your next course starts. 

Schedule 2: Afternoon Option

Session D - 1:10-2:05pm – 102 Wing or via Zoom
