Chamber Music Concert

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Department of Music presents its annual chamber music concert featuring its scholarships ensembles. The groups play on Saturday, April 12 at 4 p.m. in Annett Recital Hall at the Lowe Center for the Arts.

The performing chamber ensembles are coached throughout the semester by various faculty members of the music department who are assigned to them. Unlike typical large ensemble playing, groups range in size of three to five performers and each play one to a part. As there is no conductor when groups perform, musicians must exercise great attention to detail and perform as leaders in the ensemble, allowing audience goers to witness true personal interaction between the musicians on stage.

Students performing each receive a scholarship as part of their participation and study with the chamber music program at UWL. Coaches for these ensembles include Dr. Michelle Elliott for the Hoeschler Strings; Professor Jon Ailabouni and Dr. Joseph Greer for the Hoefer Brass Quintet; and Dr. Jonathan Borja for the Cordeiro Winds.

Saturday’s concert features the following ensembles in order of performance: The Hoeschler Strings with Yassia Felts (violin), Nathan Olson (viola), and Aaron Freeburg (cello); The Hoefer Quinter Brass Quintet with Neil Clyne (trumpet), Evelyn Lutz (trumpet), Ryan Brown (horn), Jonathan Heck (trombone), and Nathan Zirk (tuba); and the Cordeiro Winds with Ann David (flute), Sasha Forbes (oboe), and Aly Cvikota (clarinet).

With a diverse set of instrumentations to be heard, this concert features music by composers Erno Dohnanyi, Barabara York, and Jacques Ibert. This concert is free and open to the public. For more information, visit uwlax.edu/vpa or contact the Music Office at 608-785-8409.
