UWL Concert Band

Wanderings

The UWL Concert Band performs their first concert of the 2024-2015 academic year!

The band, conducted by Professor Martin I. Gaines, plays at noon on Saturday, December 7 at Annett Recital Hall in the Lowe Center for the Arts.

Saturday’s concert is exciting and packed with a variety of works for audience members to experience. The concert opens with the driving rhythms of Katahj Copley’s AYO before segueing into more pensive and paced music. Most composers whose work is played on this concert are still alive today, leading to a modern tone for the concert. Other modern composers featured on the program include James Barnes, Robert Sheldon, Cait Nishimura, Nicole Piunno, and Michele Fernández.

In addition to being conducted by Martin Gaines, several students will be guest conducting the band for various pieces throughout the concert. Not only are music students allowed to foster their skills as an instrumentalist at UWL, but they also have opportunities to learn about other musical passions such as leading an ensemble through rehearsal and conducting musicians on the stage.

Guest conductors for this concert are Gavin Dillie, McKenna Sherrod, Gary Brandenburg, Colin Miller, and Jacob Spredemann.

The Concert Band is open without audition to all students on campus, allowing those students who wish to continue playing their instrument the opportunity to do so without the stakes of an audition.

The Lowe Center for the Arts is currently adjacent to a major construction project for a new parking ramp. Please visit uwlax.edu/vpa/parking for more information. Both concerts are free and open to the public, no advance reservations required.
