Impressionist Soirée

An Evening of French Music, Art, and Poetry

In a collaborative effort between the departments of Music, Art and Global Cultures & Languages, UW-La Crosse will present an evening exploring the intersectionality of French music, art, poetry.

The Impressionist Soirée is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in Annett Recital Hall in the Lowe Center for the Arts.

Impressionism was, during its time, a radical movement of Paris-based artists in the late 19th century, often defined by sketchy, visible brushstrokes that sought to capture the effects of light. The style derives its name from Claude Monet’s “Impression, Sunrise,” which features in the soirée.

Associate Professor Sierra Rooney, who specializes in art history, will give talks on Impressionism Era painters Édouard Manet, Claude Monet and James Abbott McNeill Whistler throughout the evening. Assistant Professor Dany Jacob, who is originally from Luxembourg and holds multiple degrees in French, will recite the poetry associated with the works.

“Poets and composers such as Stéphane Mallarmé and Claude Debussy helped define Impressionism as a truly multi-media movement,” says Rooney. “This evening celebrates the rich correspondences between Impressionist art, music and literature.”

Various works by Debussy that are associated with the art and poetry discussed will be performed by Associate Professor Jonathan Borja on flute and Associate Professor Mary Tollefson on piano. Each have had extensive careers in teaching and performing ,and will bring these French masterworks to life.

In summer 2025, Rooney and Borja will lead a study abroad program titled “Paris: Its Art and Music.” Wednesday’s evening of music, art and poetry samples what students can learn through this faculty-led experience. This program is facilitated by the International Education & Engagement Office. There will be a student information session at 12 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, in room 131 of the Lowe Center for the Arts.

This event is free and open to the public. No reservations are required. Visit uwlax.edu/VPA for complete 2024-25 programming from UWL’s School of Visual and Performing Arts.
