UWL Symphony Orchestra Concert

ArtsFest 2025 Signature Event

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Martin I. Gaines, invites the public to an inspiring afternoon of orchestral color and dynamic storytelling in Khromorphia, a signature concert of ArtsFest 2025. The performance will take place on Saturday, April 26 at 2 p.m. in the Annett Recital Hall at the Truman T. Lowe Center for the Arts. Admission is free and open to the public.

This vivid program explores the expressive spectrum of orchestral music, from timeless classics to bold contemporary works. Saturday’s concert is titled from one of the selections to be performed, Khromorphia (2024) by Katahj Copley – a thrilling and vibrant new work bursting with sonic color and modern energy. The composer notes that Khromorphia is a blended word comprised of Khroma, the goddess of colors, and Morpheus, the god of dreams.

Over the course of this academic year, the music department has made a point of featuring the works of female composers, including but not limited to Kimberly Archer, Jodie Blackshaw, Jennifer Jolley, Michele Fernandez, Nicole Piunno, and Cait Nishimura. Saturday’s concert features Faust Overture (1880) by Romantic Era composer Emilie Mayer.

Other works on the program include Pavane pour une infante défunte (1899) by Maurice Ravel and Lyric Metal (2013) by Brian Balmages. The concert closes Sabre Dance from Gayane (1939) by Aram Khachaturian, which is an electrifying and instantly recognizable finale that promises to leave audiences full of energy.

In his role as conductor, Gaines encourages his students to take ownership of their artistic growth and sees their musicianship as a lifelong journey. “In the short-term, I hope each new student feels inspired to make music every day and contribute among friends. In the long-term, I know the musicianship of our students will continue to grow and mature, and I look forward to sharing their talents with the greater UWL community.”

Khromorphia is presented as part of ArtsFest 2025, UW-La Crosse’s annual celebration of creativity across the visual and performing arts. This concert is free and open to the public. For more information, visit uwlax.edu/vpa.
