The Experiential and The Artificial

The Art of Codey Gallas and Ryan Send

The UW-La Crosse Art Gallery presents a duo exhibition featuring the collaborative works of Codey Gallas and Ryan Send. Opening reception is on September 27 from 5-6:30 p.m.

This exhibition explores the “real versus artificial” with art that prods viewers to consider how one might experience artificial nature in a fabricated situation. Send creates hyper-realistic floral sculptures from metal that address endangered plant life and themes of conservation. Gallas, who specifically explores the flora and fauna of Wisconsin ditches, fabricates objects that disperse seeds into places forgotten by humanity.

Gallas earned his B.F.A. in Mankato, MN and his M.F.A. in Greensboro, NC and is currently a high school ceramics teacher in Waukesha, but grew up in Minnesota where he first explored the wilderness offered by the natural world. Gallas, who seeks to connect with the “wild places” around him, feels they are different than when he was a child – and the changes he has witnessed influence his newest work.

Send, who also teaches art in Waukesha, recently earned his M.F.A. in 2023 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His thesis, titled Gravity, features traditional blacksmithing techniques to create seemingly dropping and melting steel “organisms.” Send recently did an artist residency at the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum in Milwaukee and is set to teach metal smithing and blacksmithing workshops for the College for Kids program at UW-Milwaukee this coming summer.

On September 27 (opening day) Gallas and Send give artists talks at 4 p.m. in Annett Recital Hall in the Lowe Center for the Arts. The opening reception follows from 5-6:30 p.m.

The Lowe Center for the Arts is currently adjacent to a major construction project for a new parking ramp. Visit uwlax.edu/vpa/parking for more information about parking. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public.
