Jazz Concert

UWL Jazz Ensemble & Jazz Orchestra

Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra jointly return to the Bluffs Ballroom of the UWL Student Union for their final concert of 2024. Both groups play back-to-back on Friday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Opening the show is the Jazz Ensemble, directed by Professor Jon Ailabouni. The band gets the mood going with Mike Carubia’s Manhattan Dance Party, and a mixture of rhythms both steady and “unexpected” will fill the room throughout the night.

The Jazz Orchestra, directed by Dr. Jeff Erickson, plays immediately following. This group consistently performs top-quality college and professional big band literature and is UWL’s premier big band. Friday’s concert will be no exception to the talent and dedication found within both jazz groups and will leave a lasting impression on attendees.

Music programmed for the evening covers many different types of music, including swing, Latin, and contemporary big band music. A few holiday tunes are also on the program, with titles such as Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and Frosty the Snowman—but they will be different than what one is used to hearing in the grocery store and gives a fresh take on these timeless classics.

Each group boasts students from a diverse range of majors across campus. As is stylistic of jazz music, the concert features various musicians in solos and improvisation throughout the evening.

Both concerts are free and open to the public, no advance reservations required.
