Jazz Combo Concert

UWL Jazz Combos play! Featuring two ensembles, The Opposition and Monkey Business, this concert offers a mix of jazz classics and contemporary interpretations.

The first combo, The Opposition, will open the night with a set highlighting jazz improvisation and ensemble interplay. Their repertoire includes Sonny Rollins’ Pent-Up HouseCold Duck Time by Eddie Harris, and Perdido by Juan Tizol. They will also present Just a Merengue, an original composition by trombonist Marshall Dvorak. This group features baritone saxophonist Gavin Dillie, trombonist Marshall Dvorak, guitarist Tommy Vote, bassist Stella Blum, and drummer Jacob Sabir.

Following this performance, Monkey Business will take the stage with their own interpretations. Their set includes One By One by Wayne Shorter, Fungi Mama by Blue Mitchell, Maiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock, and an arrangement of Lady Bird by tenor saxophonist Obi Chavolla. This ensemble includes trumpeter Neil Clyne, tenor saxophonist Obi Chavolla, trombonist Carson Schmidt, pianist William Murphy, bassist Sean Fernan, and drummer Magnus Davidson.

This concert is free and open to the public, providing an opportunity for jazz enthusiasts and newcomers to hear UW-La Crosse’s student musicians. The program features a variety of swing, bebop, funk, and Latin influences.
