This compelling program highlights a diverse array of musical styles and personal stories, all brought to life by an array of of student performers. From intimate art songs to innovative ensemble works, the recital showcases the creativity and emotional depth of the university’s young composers. These original compositions emerged from the composition studio of Music Assistant Professor Dr. David Dies.

Among the featured works is A Cloud’s Love and Fury by Carissa Maske, a deeply personal piano solo that explores the emotional journey of her family following a cancer diagnosis. Nathan Olson presents multiple pieces, including Three Songs of Solomon, Op. 2, No. 1, based on biblical love poetry, and Bright Star, Op. 2, No. 3, a poignant setting of John Keats’ final sonnet.

Emily Flottmeyer contributes two evocative pieces: A Return Home, inspired by the dual nature of grief and comfort found in water and siren mythology; and Time Consuming Spirals, a gripping portrayal of obsessive-compulsive disorder for wind trio, presented as a recording of The Cordeiro Trio.

Victoria Ratsch offers two works that examine the complexities of emotion—Cyclical Exhale, for viola and piano, explores the tension between anxiety and calm, while Love’s Inner Monologue reflects on the vulnerable excitement of a new romance with a full band including voice, guitar, bass, and keys.

Danica Lee channels the challenges presented by her first composition in Struggle, Triumph, and Broken Pencil Lead. Her second work, Hexatonic Hullabaloo, featuring alto saxophone and trumpet, encapsulates a rhythm of fun-loving banter between instruments as they battle for importance.

Rounding out the program is A Walk on the Beach by Jessica Barrett, a unique percussion quartet realized using unconventional materials such as beans, rice, and cardboard boxes. The piece creatively captures the sounds of ocean waves through nontraditional techniques, illustrating music’s accessibility and imaginative potential.

The recital promises an afternoon of moving, thought-provoking performances that celebrate the next generation of composers. All are welcome to attend and experience these original works in an intimate concert setting.
