The University of Wisconsin–La Crosse Department of Music invites the community to step onto the dance floor for the 38th Annual Big Band Cabaret & Dance Party on Friday, February 27 in the Bluffs Ballroom, UWL Student Union.

The evening begins at 6:00 p.m. with free swing dance lessons for ticket holders, making it the perfect opportunity for beginners and seasoned dancers alike to brush up on their moves. Live music begins at 7:30 p.m.

Advance tickets are available through Thursday, February 26 at noon. Tickets and event details can be found at uwlax.edu/vpa.

The cabaret features two of UWL’s premier jazz ensembles under the direction of Professor Jon Ailabouni: The Black Coat Jazz Band and The Tuxedo Dance Orchestra.

Audiences can expect an electrifying program spanning classic swing, Latin jazz, pop favorites, and dance hall staples. Selections include iconic big band standards such as “Jumpin’ at the Woodside” by Count Basie, “Take the A Train” by Billy Strayhorn, and “Two O’Clock Jump” associated with Basie, Goodman, and Harry James.

The program also features beloved standards including “Night and Day” by Cole Porter, “Moon River” by Henry Mancini, and “Come Fly with Me” by Jimmy Van Heusen and Sammy Cahn.

High-energy dance favorites such as “Jump, Jive an’ Wail” by Louis Prima, “Mambo No. 5” by Perez Prado, “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder, and “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire round out a program designed to keep the ballroom moving all night long.

The event combines the elegance of a classic cabaret with the infectious energy of live big band performance, showcasing talented student musicians from across Wisconsin and beyond. Proceeds support UWL Jazz Studies Scholarships, helping recruit and sustain the next generation of jazz artists.

Guests are encouraged to dress for a festive night out and enjoy an evening of timeless music, lively dancing, and community celebration.
