Join us for an exciting evening of big band music with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra as they present the Jazz Composers Showcase concert. The bands play in the Bluffs Ballroom of the UWL Student Union at 7:30 pm on October 21. Both ensembles are led and directed by Professor Jon Ailabouni.

Taking the stage first is the Jazz Ensemble, who opens with “Big Dipper” by Thad Jones, who is regarded as one of the greatest jazz trumpet soloists, composers, and band leaders of the 20th century. Other composers whose works are included in the Jazz Ensemble performance include Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Wayne Shorter, Maria Schneider, and Kris Berg.

The Jazz Orchestra follows with program also including works by Duke Ellington, as well as Lillian Hardin Armstrong, Astor Piazzola, Charles Mingus, and Bob Washut. The Jazz Orchestra, which focus on a wide range of repertoire from swing to fusion, focuses on top quality college and big band literature in their performances and is sure to deliver in this showcase of legendary jazz composers.

As is customary in jazz music, Tuesday’s concert features many of the student musicians as featured soloists and improvisors. Ailabouni, who is in his first year serving as the director of Jazz Studies at UWL, notes that “the variety of instruments, timbral combinations, and available soloists in a large jazz ensemble make it an ideal setting for creative expression for jazz composers. Our concert will demonstrate how that creativity has manifested from the earliest jazz icons to the present day with contemporary visionaries who write compelling music for this instrumentation. With the 20 musicians in a big band, the possibilities are endless!”
