Jazz Concert

ft. UWL Jazz Ensemble & Jazz Orchestra

Join us for UWL's Jazz Ensemble & Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Jon Ailabouni.  Free & open to the public. 

The University of Wisconsin–La Crosse Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra will take the stage for Jazz Continuum on Saturday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bluffs Ballroom, located in the UWL Student Union. The concert is free and open to the public.

Directed by Jazz Studies Director Prof. Jon Ailabouni, Jazz Continuum highlights the evolving tradition of jazz through a dynamic program that bridges classic standards, contemporary works, and inventive arrangements.

The evening opens with the UWL Jazz Ensemble performing a diverse set of pieces, including Fred Sturm’s Aim High and the timeless standard The Way You Look Tonight by Dorothy Fields and Jerome Kern. The ensemble also explores jazz and blues influences with Miles Davis’s Vierd Blues and Sammy Nestico’s That Warm Feeling. Audiences will hear vibrant contemporary selections such as Jessika Smith’s Silver Rush alongside the groove-driven It’s All Over Now, arranged in the style of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

The UWL Jazz Orchestra continues the program with a wide-ranging repertoire that underscores the depth and versatility of big band jazz. Highlights include John Clayton’s I Be Serious ‘Bout Dem Blues, Bill Evans’s Peri’s Scope in an arrangement by Mike Tomaro, and Melba Liston’s Late Date. The orchestra also presents Liston’s imaginative arrangements of Claude Debussy’s Reverie and Edvard Grieg’s Annie’s Dance, demonstrating the intersection of classical and jazz traditions. The program concludes with Charles Mingus’s powerful Haitian Fight Song and Mike Conrad’s West Point.

Featuring numerous student soloists throughout the evening, Jazz Continuum celebrates both individual artistry and ensemble collaboration, offering audiences an engaging journey through jazz’s past, present, and future. For more information, visit uwlax.edu/vpa.
