Treble Chorus

Songs that Cannot be Silenced

The Treble Chorus at University of Wisconsin–La Crosse will present an evening of powerful and reflective choral music in its spring concert, Songs That Cannot Be Silenced, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, in Annett Recital Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.

Conducted by Dr. Kourtney R. Austin, the program explores themes of resilience, community, and the enduring human spirit through a diverse selection of repertoire spanning traditional, contemporary, and global works.

The concert opens with the vibrant Festival Alleluia by Sonja Poorman, setting an energetic and celebratory tone. From there, audiences will be taken on a musical journey across cultures with selections such as Tumekuja Kuimba, a joyful piece rooted in East African song traditions, featuring student soloists.

A centerpiece of the program includes selections from Songs of Survival, arranged by Margaret Dryburgh and Norah Chambers during their internment in a World War II Sumatran prison camp. The work offers a poignant contemplation on music’s role in sustaining hope during times of hardship. Ms. Chambers once reflected that the idea was “to bring singers together…to make music to uplift us and perhaps bring some beauty and sanity.” The two women remarkably wrote out music on odd bits of paper, in pencil, and as small as possible to save paper.  The Treble Chorus will perform pieces by Dvorak and Ravel from this series.

Contemporary works further enrich the program, including Water Fountain by Tune-Yards, and Still I Rise by Rosephanye Powell, inspired by the poetry of Maya Angelou and celebrating perseverance and empowerment. Regarding the upcoming performance, Dr. Austin said, “I am particularly looking forward to highlighting a movement from Craig Hella Johnson’s Considering Matthew Shepard. “Deer Song” is a deeply moving meditation using some of the facts of the tragedy and subsequent investigation to express emotion and remembrance of a beautiful life lost.

The Treble Chorus is accompanied by pianist Joseph Louis, with additional featured student soloists throughout the evening. This performance is part of the spring concert season presented by the UWL School of Visual & Performing Arts. No tickets are required, and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
