Concert Band

Frequency

What: UWL Concert Band Performance
When: December 7 at 2 p.m.
Where: Annett Recital Hall, Truman T. Lowe Center for the Arts
Admission: Free and open to the public.

The University of Wisconsin–La Crosse Music Department proudly announces the upcoming performance of the UWL Concert Band, presenting its fall program, “Frequency,” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, in Annett Recital Hall, located within the Lowe Center for the Arts. The concert is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of Dr. Martin I. Gaines, the program showcases a compelling range of works spanning over a century of wind band repertoire—from early concert band traditions to vibrant contemporary voices.  The concert opens with Jess Langston Turner’s Bock Fanfares (2013), an energetic and rhythmically charged work that sets an uplifting tone, followed by the expressive lyricism of Percy Grainger’s Ye Banks and Braes O’ Bonnie Doon.

A staple of mid-century American band literature, Francis McBeth’s Chant and Jubilo (1963) follows, led by guest student conductor McKenna Sherrod. The piece contrasts solemn, chant-like lines with powerful, jubilant declarations, allowing the ensemble’s expressive and dynamic range to shine.

In a major highlight of the afternoon, the Concert Band presents the consortium premiere of Catherine Likhuta’s Friends for Life (2025). Likhuta’s newest work explores themes of connection, trust, and resilience—bringing fresh, emotionally resonant writing to the wind band repertoire.

The ensemble then performs Minoo Dixon’s Frequency (2025), the title work for the program. Dixon, a rising young composer, interweaves pulse, resonance, and evolving textures to create a compelling musical journey centered on energy and transformation.

Other works on this program include Charm by Kevin Puts, The Hippodrome by Will Huff, and “God Rest You, Merry Gentlement,” arrange by E. Huckeby. This performance is free and open to the public. For more information, visit uwlax.edu/vpa.
