Transcendence

When: December 7 at 4 p.m.
Where: Annett Recital Hall, Truman T. Lowe Center for the Arts
Admission: Free and open to the public.

University of Wisconsin–La Crosse Music Department is proud to present the UWL Symphony Orchestra in its upcoming concert, Transcendence, at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, in Annett Recital Hall, located in the Lowe Center for the Arts. The event is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of Dr. Martin I. Gaines, the orchestra will offer a powerful and uplifting program that highlights renowned contemporary composers whose works explore reflection, spiritual depth, and expressive storytelling.

The concert opens with Adolphus Hailstork’s Sonata da Chiesa (1992)**, a seven-movement work that journeys through exultation, mystery, devotion, and peace. The sequence—Exultate, O Magnum Mysterium, Adoro, Jubilate, Agnus Dei, Dona Nobis Pacem, and the return of Exultate—invites listeners into a rich and contemplative sound world shaped by one of America’s leading symphonic voices.

Continuing the theme, the orchestra will perform Am’re Ford’s Transcendence (2014), a dynamic and emotive work that lends its title to the full program. Ford’s piece blends soaring melodic writing with rhythmic vitality, offering a musical exploration of rising beyond adversity.

The program also features Jessie Montgomery’s Hymn for Everyone (2024), a luminous and inclusive musical meditation by one of today’s most celebrated American composers. Montgomery’s work is a call for unity, collective empathy, and shared expression.

Rounding out the concert is Rob Wiffin’s Fairy Doll (2023), a playful and imaginative orchestral piece that brings a sense of whimsy to the afternoon’s repertoire.

The UWL Symphony Orchestra invites campus and community members to join in an afternoon of profound musical expression, reflection, and celebration. This performance is free and open to the public. For more information, visit uwlax.edu/vpa.
