The UWL Department of Music presents a special program titled Modern Brazilian Jazz this Friday on February 13. The performance is in Annett Recital Hall at the Truman T. Lowe Center for the Arts starting at 7:30 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

This special faculty recital will explore the rich and vibrant traditions of modern Brazilian jazz, featuring works by influential composers including Victor Assis Brasil, Diego Garbin, Claudio Roditi, Hermeto Pascoal, Edu Ribeiro, and Chico Pinheiro. The program blends contemporary jazz language with Brazilian rhythmic traditions, offering audiences an evening of energetic, lyrical, and rhythmically sophisticated music.

The performance features an accomplished ensemble of current and former UWL faculty and guest artists, including Jon Ailabouni, current Director of Jazz Studies at UWL on trumpet and flugelhorn; Dr. Jeff Erickson, former Director of Jazz Studies at UWL on soprano and tenor saxophone; Karyn Quinn, former Director of Jazz Studies at UWL on bass; Bryan Nichols on piano; Dr. Rich MacDonald on drum set; and Jordan Kowalski on percussion.

Selected repertoire includes Prô Zeca, Revoar, E Nada Mais, Tupizando, Cinco, Galada, and Morro da Urca, highlighting both established and emerging voices in Brazilian jazz. Friday’s performance offers audiences an opportunity to experience the depth and diversity of Brazil’s contemporary jazz tradition through the artistry of accomplished faculty and guest performers. The recital reflects UWL’s commitment to artistic excellence, cultural engagement, and student-centered learning through performance.
