Symphony Orchestra

"American Impressions"

The University of Wisconsin–La Crosse Symphony Orchestra will present its spring concert, American Impressions, on Sunday, May 3 at 4 p.m. in Annett Recital Hall, Lowe Center for the Arts. The performance is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of Dr. Martin I. Gaines, the program showcases a range of American orchestral voices, blending iconic works with a contemporary premiere.

The concert opens with two beloved fanfares by Aaron Copland: Fanfare for the Common Man and An Outdoor Overture, both emblematic of Copland’s bold, expansive musical language. The program continues with Remembrance/Return (2006) by UWL student Victoria Ratsch, featuring two movements—The Sun Remembers and But December Returns. This performance marks the world premiere of the work, highlighting the ensemble’s commitment to new music and emerging composers.

The orchestra will also perform movements from Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 1, “Nordic”, a richly expressive work rooted in late-Romantic traditions. Additional selections include Copland’s reflective Down A Country Lane and the energetic Hoe-Down from Rodeo, bringing the program to a vibrant close.

The UWL Symphony Orchestra is composed of talented student musicians from across the university, joined by community members, reflecting a collaborative spirit central to the ensemble’s mission.

This concert offers audiences an engaging exploration of American musical identity—past and present—through works that range from contemplative to celebratory.
