Thinking Critically in College: The Essential Handbook for Student Success

Author Book Signing

The Joint Committee for Civil Discourse is excited to offer up to 25 copies of Thinking Critically in College by Dr. Louis Newman. Stop by for a special book signing opportunity with the author himself—then join us for an engaging session where Dr. Newman will share practical insights on how to become a stronger, more independent thinker. There are two sessions:

10:00–11:15 AM – Student Session
Title: ""Thinking Critically in College:  What You Need to Know"

Most students discover that college is much harder academically than high school was.  You're being asked to think in new and more sophisticated ways, which your professors may not explain clearly.  No matter how well you have done until now, you may need to step up your game.  In this session, you'll learn the keys to studying effectively, thinking in the ways your professors expect, and using your college education to prepare you to think critically for the rest of your life.

12:00–1:15 PM – Faculty & Staff Session
Title: "Teaching Our Students to be Critical Thinkers”

Teaching our students to become critical thinkers has long been a central goal of higher education, but doing so has never been more challenging—or more important—than it is today.  As educators, we often assume incorrectly that our students will learn these skills simply by taking our courses and internalizing the modes of thinking we model for them.  In this presentation, we will explore what critical thinking is and introduce some techniques for teaching it more effectively.
