Getting Around La Crosse: Past, Present and Future

From streetcars to highways to multimodal dreams

La Crosse wasn’t always built around the car. At its peak, the city saw over 5 million streetcar rides each year. But in just a few decades, a thriving multimodal culture was dismantled—replaced by roadway expansion and sprawling land use that reshaped La Crosse into a car-centric community. Today, the city stands at a turning point.

Join our panelists as they trace this story—how we got here, where we are now, and what it will take to build a future where transit, walking, biking, and driving are all safe and convenient options.
