The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse presents a special afternoon of flute music featuring Dr. Jonathan Borja, Associate Professor of Music, in recital. The performance will take place on Sunday, February 1 at 2 p.m. in Annett Recital Hall at the Truman T. Lowe Center for the Arts. Dr. Borja, a distinguished performer and educator at UW-La Crosse, will perform both established and contemporary works for solo flute.

Sunday’s recital opens with Flying Solo (2018) by Arturo Rodríguez, who headlined the La Crosse New Music Festival back in 2023, hosted annually by UWL Music. Dr. Borja gave the first performance of this work just last May. Scrivo in vento (1991) by Elliot Carter follows, showcasing the extended technique of the flute through brooding passages of music erupting into effervescent energy.

Dr. Borja’s recital, which opens with two contemporary works, begins to venture further back into time as each next piece has an older publishing date than the previous. Next will be Density 21.5 (1936) by Edgard Varèse, followed by Syrinx (1913) by French Impressionism composer Claude Debussy. The performance closes by taking us back to the Baroque era with Partita in A minor, BWV 1013 (1723) by Johann Sebastian Bach.

With performances described as “the highlight of the evening” (Kansas City Star), Jonathan Borja enjoys a varied career as a performer and educator. As a dedicated advocate for new and underrepresented music, he has performed throughout the United States and Mexico, appearing at renowned venues and festivals. Dr. Borja is Associate Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse where he teaches flute and music history. He has been a member of the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra since 2019, appearing as soloist in 2023.

Please note that the Lowe Center for the Arts is currently adjacent to a major parking ramp construction project. For more information on parking, visit uwlax.edu/vpa. Admission to this recital is free and open to the public.
