The UWL School of Visual & Performing Arts and Department of Music will present internationally acclaimed bass-baritone Dashon Burton in concert as part of the ArtsFest Advance! Guest Artist Series at 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 20, in Annett Recital Hall, Lowe Center for the Arts.

Burton will be joined by pianist Dr. Lindsay Garritson and flutist Dr. Jonathan Borja for an evening of art song, chamber music, and spirituals spanning more than a century of musical expression.

Hailed by The Boston Globe as an artist “alight with the spirit of the music,” Burton is a three-time Grammy Award winner who performs regularly with leading orchestras and ensembles throughout the United States and Europe. His recent appearances include performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, and Cleveland Orchestra.

The program features works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Richard Strauss, Gabriel Fauré, Scott Perkins, and Margaret Bonds, including selections from Songs of Travel, Mirages, Three Songs for Autumn, and Three Dream Portraits. The concert will conclude with Bonds’ powerful spiritual “You Can Tell the World.”

Together, these works explore themes of journey, reflection, identity, and resilience through diverse musical traditions.

Dashon Burton holds degrees from Oberlin College and Conservatory and Yale University’s Institute of Sacred Music, and he currently serves as assistant professor of voice at Vanderbilt University. His recordings include Songs of Struggle & Redemption and critically acclaimed albums with Roomful of Teeth.

ArtsFest Advance! brings nationally recognized artists to UWL to enrich campus learning and strengthen community engagement through performance and education.

This performance is sponsored in part by the UWL Visiting Artist & Scholar Grant. Entry to this concert is free and open to the public, no advance reservations required. For more information, visit uwlax.edu/vpa.
