Flow State Literary Series

Dean Bakopoulos, Professor of Cinema Arts, offers craft talk

Dean Bakopoulos, scriptwriter, novelist, essayist, and professor of Cinema Arts at the University of Iowa, will discuss his writing, particularly the process of adapting his fiction to film. The winner of a Guggenheim Fellowship and NEA fellowships in both fiction and nonfiction, Dean's first novel, Please Don’t Come Back from the Moon, was a New York Times Notable Book; he co-wrote and co-produced the film adaptation, which debuted at the 2017 Los Angeles Film Festival starring Jeffrey Wahlberg and Rashida Jones. Dean is also co-creator and executive producer of the HBO MAX series Made for Love. His second novel, My American Unhappiness, was named one of the year’s best novels by The Chicago Tribune, and his third novel, Summerlong was an independent bookstore bestseller and is now in development as a feature film based on his original screenplay. He is currently developing several original projects for television at major studios and production companies.

In an evening event, Dean will read from his work, answer questions, and sign books: 7 p.m. at the Pump House Regional Arts Center (117 King St.)  Both events--sponsored by the English Department, the Pump House, and Pearl Street Books--are free and open to the public.
